STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART

How are things at your Church? Terrible. How are you feeling? Awful. How are things at Home? I want to get out. It is very easy to get into the habit of complaining and murmuring. The news is full of encouragement……the War in Ukraine, Famine in Africa, the Border Crisis, Climate change, Water shortages, the list goes on.

Where does the complaining Spirit take us. We become depressed. We isolate because we think no one cares. We continue to internalize and repeat the bad news. If we still have friends, they are full of bad news too. At times in my life, I have been there. I remember one Sunday when a Pastor friend preached a sermon that I have never forgotten. He said, “When the waves are about to swamp your boat, keep hanging on.” I cried that day and I have never forgotten it. I have had several opportunities to share that with others. In fact, I am impressed with the fact that there are some people out there who need to hear these words.

The alternative is to start counting your Blessings like the old chorus goes. Psalm 150:6 says “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.” I praise the Lord for the man in his 80’s who invited me to his house for dinner and gave me a gift. And I thank God for the woman in her 80’s who planted beautiful flowers in our planters at the Shelter. I also thank the Lord for the woman who served us recently at the Shelter with a sweet spirit after getting a devastating diagnosis from her doctor. I am thankful that many of you are still able to pray and to uphold the New Hope Shelter in prayer. This morning, I want to direct you back to the words of Psalm 150:6. Be encouraged this week.

THE DEDICATION AND RIBBON CUTTING ARE OVER

We enjoyed a Great time at the Ribbon Cutting with the Newton Chamber of Commerce on Friday, April 5th. We had a Community Dedication on Sunday, April 7th which was standing room only. Several hundred people had the opportunity to tour our new Shelter. If you would like a tour, please give Brian or Marilyn a call at 316-283-7711 and we will be happy to arrange one for you or for a group.

APRIL IS NATIONAL VOLUNTEER MONTH

We are always looking for good volunteers. If you would consider being a volunteer, please give Marilyn, our Volunteer Coordinator, a call at 316-283-7711. If you love to mow and use a weed eater we are looking for you.

SPRING INTO ACTION

At the April 7th Dedication a young woman by the name of Laura spoke. She came out of jail to the Shelter last year after being jailed for her Meth. Use. She got a job in a toxic waste plant and worked hard. She saved her money and moved into a place of her own. She has now gotten a raise and a promotion. She has also been reunited with her 5-year-old daughter who was in foster care. Would you consider supporting the New Hope Shelter monthly to help women just like Laura put their lives back together again? We need four new monthly supporters starting this month. You can send a check or give through our website www.newhope-shelter.org

FINANCIAL THOUGHT

The people of America are increasingly Car-poor. 62% of all used cars are now financed and 80% of all new cars are financed. Tip: move in the direction of getting your car paid off quickly. When you don't have a vehicle loan, save for a car you can buy with cash. Keep it well maintained and make it work for you rather than you working for it.

March 2024 Newsletter

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART

As of January 27, we have moved into the new Shelter at 308 South Meridian Road. We saw God’s hand in the whole process. Let me share a few examples. We asked for boxes and packing materials so that we could make the move. We had more than enough. We didn’t have to buy any.

We had to pack and sort the contents of the Shelter. A very efficient and dedicated group came together on the morning of January 13 and handled that job.

We needed to move over our shelving units to the new building so that we would be ready to receive what we were moving. A group of retired men with trucks and trailers volunteered, and several residents teamed up with them to move the shelving.

On January 27, moving day, it was cold and there was a coat of ice on everything. Volunteers started arriving at 900 West Broadway by droves including most of the Bethel College Football team. The first pickup backed up to the front door and the move began. Pickups, pickups with trailers and a 27-foot U-Haul type truck assisted us, along with over 150 volunteers. It moved so fast that it was like trying to get a drink out of a firehose. In 2 hours and 45 minutes we were moved.

We are so Thankful for those of you who prayed and helped in so many ways. There were tech people who came in and disconnected our systems and saw that they were working in our new facility. Our staff were troopers in this whole process and pitched in so many ways. I am so grateful.

An Update

A couple of months ago we mentioned in our newsletter that a man had walked from McPherson KS to the Shelter to seek help. 28 Miles. He got a job in Newton as a construction worker. He is in his own place now and came to see us recently on his electric bicycle. He is doing great.

In this month of Love show the New Hope Shelter some love with a check, or by giving online at newhope-shelter.org. We need your continuing support.

Volunteers Needed

We are looking for a volunteer each weekday morning to answer the telephone and to monitor the front desk at the new Shelter from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. If you are be interested in helping, please call Marilyn at 316-283-7711.

Don’t give money to panhandlers at Dillon’s or Walmart. Give us a call at the New Hope Shelter and we will offer them help.

Did You Know?

We have a Food pantry that is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.. We accept donations of canned goods, fresh produce, frozen meat, bread, and pastries, etc. If we get surplus food, we share it with other organizations. We won’t let it go to waste. Call Brian at 316-283-7711 for more details.

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART

What a year it has been. As I think of 2023, the faces of all the people we have served go by—several hundred, each with their own story. Some of you interacted with some of them personally. Many of you supported us in one way or another during the year. We couldn’t have done it without you.

We were all lulled into thinking that Covid was gone—completely. When we go to the grocery store, we don’t see people with masks smiling at us with their eyes. In fact, Covid isn’t gone. During the year we had several outbreaks. Fortunately, it was not like the original strains which were intense. While mild, we experienced disruption several times during the year.

On Friday, March 24th we broke ground on the new building at 308 South Meridian Road in Newton. In April dirt work started and it has been non-stop ever since. Hutton Construction and its subcontractors have done an awesome job.

I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention our Staff. Through it all they have served diligently. I want to say a big thanks to them.

We Love You, Brian Bisbee

Some of You Have Asked ...

Last month I told the story of the man who walked 28 miles from McPherson so that he could find a place to stay at the New Hope Shelter. He is now working full-time at a Construction job and is progressing well.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your support of New Hope Shelter through in-kind gifts, your time as a volunteer, financially, in prayer and in so many other ways I have not mentioned over the years. We are   indeed a place of healing and the restoration of Hope, and you have been a huge part of that.

A resident I will refer to as “J” came to us about three months ago. A relationship with an abusive boyfriend had crumbled. Her daughter was in foster care. She was jobless and destitute. She had been involved in criminal activity, was in the throes of addiction and had only one way to look from the bottom—and that was up.

She wrote this very insightful statement about the condition of her life, “Your placement here saved my life.” That is a role the New Hope Shelter, with your support, has played in the lives of many.

It is easy to cite statistics on how many people we have sheltered and how many meals we have served. We have those statistics. However, they mean little when compared to the desperate need we had to address in the life of J. She also wrote the following statement that was very direct and raw, “Don’t give up on me — I can do this.”

What has she achieved in the past three months?

● She is substance free and has a strong commitment to being so.
● She has sought the support of resources in the community like NA.
● She has spent hours experiencing the support of volunteers and staff.
● Visitation has been restored with her daughter and talks are taking place about restoring custody.
● She has gotten a full-time job. She works hard at a dirty job and comes home every day with a smile on her face.
● She has managed her money well and saved enough to get into her own place with her name on the lease.

We haven’t given up on her. Neither have you. It is only with your support that this amazing life change has taken place. J’s life has been saved and her Hope is being restored.

As the year ends and we prepare to move into our new building at 308 South Meridian in Newton, we need your help in finishing this year strong and in launching into next year. There are many more people like J who will be calling for help. Can we count on you to contribute by check or online through our website at
www.newhope-shelter.org?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Brian Bisbee

You will not be getting too many more updates. We are packing and sorting on January 13th and moving on January 27th. Can You Believe That?

We need Packing Boxes. Please drop them off anytime. We will use them in our big move. Please pray for us in the process as it is a huge undertaking. Thanks.

DON'T LET THEM GO TO WAIST

Bring us your leftovers from that Holiday gathering, Business Lunch, Dinner, or Family Reunion. We will use them for our lunches. If you need more information, please call 316-283-7711

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART

It is only as I have worked here for a few years that I have come to realize the impact this place has had on the lives of hundreds of homeless people—some of them like “AK”.

At dusk on March 1st, we got a call from a convenience store worker in South Newton near the old Mall. She indicated that a disabled woman had been dumped on the side of the road with a couple of suitcases.

Shortly after picking up AK, we found that she was from South Dakota. Her family had left for Nevada and she had been purposely left behind. Over the next ten weeks we helped AK as she obtained public housing. We asked you to furniture and furnishings and food and we moved her to her own apartment on May 19.

On Dec. 5 she called asking us to stop by. She had gathered two huge boxes of food she wanted to donate to the Shelter. It was her way of showing her appreciation and gratitude for the help she received from the Shelter.

People constantly come in the door and apologize for the food, supplies, cash or check they are bringing us. Every little bit—put together, makes it so that our needs are supplied. Thank you for your support. As we finish up the year, please help us finish strong. We need your financial support—we have no government monies keeping our doors open.

I sincerely hope that you have a wonderful time with your family and friends this season. Merry Christmas.

We Love You,
Brian Bisbee

A Big Thanks To

  • The Goessel High Students who came on November 30th and organized our Food pantry and a storage room and brought us food. You were amazing.

  • The Women’s Community Foundation which gave us a grant to assist our residents with their special needs.

  • Brian Donley—the Newton Branch Manager and Bank of the West for the recent grant.

  • To those of you who provided Christmas Dinner and Christmas gifts to our residents.

We are excited about the progress we are making. We should have bids back from the various contractors who are studying the plans in the next couple of weeks. We appreciate your gifts to support our project to build a new facility at 308 South Meridian Road in Newton.
Every gift, large and small, helps us get closer to our goal of obtaining the Mabee Foundation challenge grant of $1,000,000 which puts us over the top.
If you need more information, please call Brian Bisbee at 316-283-7711.

A Thought...

As you are doing your last-minute Christmas shopping, (or if you are me--doing all your Christmas shopping), keep these thoughts in mind. Currently 69% of the people in America cannot come up with $1,000 in a time of emergency. 80% of the people in the store shopping with you are carrying a balance forward on their credit cards. They are not paying them off at the end of the month.

Please be careful as you shop and head into the New Year. Resolve to be in better shape financially with God’s help than you are today
