Trusting the Lord in Hard Times

There are seasons in life when the road feels uncertain, and the burdens feel heavy. For those facing homelessness, financial hardship, loss, or fear, each day can feel overwhelming. In moments like these, it is easy to wonder where hope can be found. Yet even in life’s hardest seasons, God remains faithful. Trusting the Lord does not mean we understand everything we are facing. It means we believe He is with us, even here.

At New Hope Shelter, we believe hope is never out of reach. New Hope Shelter serves homeless men, women, and children and helps them rebuild their lives with dignity and support. In every difficult season, we want people to know they are seen, valued, and never forgotten by God.

Scripture reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” When life feels uncertain, this verse encourages us to place our confidence not in what we can see but in the God who faithfully leads us forward. Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV)

Hardship often brings fear, but God speaks comfort to fearful hearts: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” His presence gives strength when we feel weak and peace when the future feels unclear. Isaiah 41:10 (ESV)

God is not distant in our struggles. He is near. He is our refuge, our strength, and our help in times of trouble. Scripture says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1 (ESV) When burdens feel too heavy to carry alone, Jesus offers rest to the weary and hope to the discouraged: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (ESV)

If you are walking through a hard time today, take heart. The Lord has not left you. He sees your pain, knows your needs, and walks with you step by step. And here at New Hope Shelter, we believe God still brings peace, strength, and new beginnings in the middle of hardship. Hope is not out of reach.

What Homelessness Really Looks Like

When most people picture homelessness, they imagine someone alone on a sidewalk with a sign. But homelessness rarely looks the way the world expects and the causes go far deeper than what we see on the surface.

It often involves addiction, untreated mental health struggles, abuse, broken relationships, and choices that lead people down a road they never planned to walk. It’s rarely one thing it’s layers built up over time until a person has nowhere left to turn.

In upcoming episodes of The New Hope Journal, we’ll talk more about the real situations that lead to homelessness families, addiction, mental health, abuse, and the choices that play a part and how we combat each of them with Jesus Christ leading our purpose at New Hope Shelter.

At New Hope Shelter, no two stories are the same. Some come to us after years of hardship. Others arrive after one painful turning point. But every person who walks through our doors has one thing in common: They are not a problem to be solved. They are a person to be loved.

We don’t pretend homelessness is only the result of circumstances outside someone’s control. We believe in telling the truth in love because real change begins when we are honest about what brought us here, and surrender it to Jesus.

Addiction is real. Mental health struggles are real. Abuse, trauma, family breakdown, loneliness, poor choices, and spiritual emptiness are all real.

But there is also redemption, healing, freedom, and new life in Christ through repentance. This is all so real, so powerful, and available to anyone willing to come to Him. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)

Homelessness may be the chapter someone is walking through, but it is never the end of their story. With Jesus at the center of our mission, New Hope Shelter walks alongside men, women, and children as God writes a new chapter of healing, restoration, and purpose.
